Ask Zero

As Zero maintains his journal, he has received many questions about things, however out here on the trail he doesn't have time to give in-depth answers all the time. What he's learned is that time is money, and the more time he spends out here, the more money he will need to finish. He'll do is best to answer all questions, but a donation is greatly appreciated.

Hi, been ready your journal from the biginning and am really enjoying it. Good luck on your hike and be careful, this coming week is supposed to be very cold.

Hey Zero, your journal is well worth the read. You tell it like it is and HYOH. Hope all the folks following your journey are an inspiration for you.

And while I'm at it here's a question or two for ya. Why did you choose to start so early? I know Mr Happy's response and for a while thought he was maybe the only crazy one out there, but then there is you and at least two others who are already through the Somokies. Was it a good idea to start in Jan? And would you make the same choice if you did it again next year?

Suggestion:
u may want to try using the plastic grocery bags to help insulate your feet. Put over sock (& tuck in top of sock) and it may help to keep heat in a little. Your feet will still be wet from sweating or snow or water. They tear easy but just throw them away.

Also I found that they also allow your feet to slide a little in your boots which helps a little to avoid hot spots...

Enjoy the SuperBowl & don't forget to drink plenty of water/electrolytes while in town!!

Hey, just wanted to let you guys know that it would be better if you posted on Zero's journal on Trail Journals rather than on here. I just put the donation button here for him because trail journals doesn't allow HTML.

I posted a comment on trailjournals.com but viewed this site and thought I'd say again how much I enjoy your journal. You've given us great suggestions on how to stay warm, I get cold just reading, brrrr! Enjoy the superbowl today and look forward to reading more of your adventure on your "walk thru the woods". Let us know what you need and I'll send you a drop box of goodies. I envy you, but look forward to section hiking this spring. Good luck and hike on!! Lipstick

Hey Zero, Do you plan on using at tent? Do the mice really run all over you at night in the Shelter?
Please tell us the pros and cons of
staying in shelters.

I know this is "Ask Zero" not "Ask Mr. Happy" but Zero isn't going to be online for a while so I figured I'll chip in and answer what I can.

Zero is not carrying a tent, nor does he plan to, as far as I know.

Yes, the mice really do run all over you in the shelters, though they became less of a nuisance as the weather got colder (below 15 degrees). Lighting a candle, as Zero did a few times, worked great to keep the mice away.

I'm sure you can figure out who this is. Do it this time. I've mailed you food before, but for some reason or another you came off the trail. If I send you a donation, how will you get it? I have e-mailed you directly. Let me know addresses if you would like me to send you anything to make you more comfortable. Read your journal, wish I was there.

Hi Zero! I've been reading your journal. Out of all the journals I've read, it's one of the best. It really makes be feel like I'm out there too. Question - Are you still carrying vitamins? Do you take them in their bottles or repackage in another container, Any idea how much do they weigh?
I'm planning a thru someday and I'd want to take vitamins too, I'm just not sure anything more than a multi would be worth the weight.
Also - How is the no smoking going? (I'm trying to quit too!)

Good luck Zero. I enjoy your journal. Hope you enjoyed the climb out of NOC. It nearly killed me in 1983 LOL. No switchbacks then. Hope to see more of the trail one day. I dropped a little something for you via paypal. Not much but I hope it helps and I hope you get it OK.

Hi Zero! I have enjoyed reading your adventures thus far. It's part of my morning schedule at work to read your latest entry before beginning my work day.

I am an AT section hiker and have completed just over 1,000 miles of the AT over the last 10 years (from Trout Creek, Va. to just north of Killington, Vt.). I will be heading to Va. in June to do the 60 miles south into Pearisburg. Later in the summer I will head to northern Vt.to finish Vt. and to head north out of Hanover, N.H.

Wishing you well on your adventure and hoping to see you on the trail.

Be safe and enjoy every step of the way!!!

Hey Zero, what a fantastic journal. I've always dreamed of hiking the AT and never did, but I shared that dream with my son who just graduated high school and is starting southbound in Maine on Thursday, June 24th. We have both been following your adventure and have been very impressed with your entries. They have probably confirmed his decision to go through with the hike. It's apparent that you will probably cross paths......His screename is Drooldog and his real name is Tommy Clark. If you come across him please take the time to share some of you experiences from now with him. Look forward to your continuing adventure. You have produced quite the book to read in the future. Good luck with the injury issue. I wish you the best.

Thanks.

Zero,
I am part of Boy Scout Troop 61 from Lansdale, PA. After hiking a few miles of the AT, we met you at the top of Sunrise Mountain (NJ) on Tuesday, July 24th. We really appreciated you taking the time to chat and answer our questions about your trek. Hopefully our "hoagie" and the extra onions & hot peppers were fair trade. Best of luck with the rest of your journey and hope you get into town to see Dallas win (except when they play the EAGLES) often. I appreciate what you're doing with the hiking and the journaling, and will be following you the rest of the way.

Take Care!
Ken

Hey Zero, this is Eddie, (I don't know if you remember me... Myself, My dad, and Goldilocks met you in a shelter in Shenandoah NP back in May... we were SB sec. hiking). I just dropped in to see how you were doin, and to wish you continued luck. I'm glad to see that you're still at it. Next June-July I'm hoping to do a big chunk of the trail up north. I want to go for at least a month up there. Congrats on making it this far, good luck on the rest of your journey -Eddie

Hi Zero. Ran into you today at the "Free Sodas" spot about 3.5 miles north of Rt. 103 in VT. I was out walking my dogs Teco and Seera. It's great to meet through-hikers when i'm out on these jaunts on snippets of the trail and makes me realize that my little corner of the hiking world is part of something much much bigger, in a lot of ways. Hope you had a good hike into the crisp night and got to see some good views by the light of the moon. Sounds inspiring.

Hey ZERO- You won't believe this. I met you at the Hiker Hostel (GA) when you rode in with Catepillar Waaaay back on January 17. I (Harley-D)was at Woody Gap when you got your ride and I got mine with two hikers in a pickup truck. Josh does a great breakfast at the HH. NEXT- I was at "The Barn" in Gorham on Sept 22 but I departed early on my Harley for a ride back to Ohio and missed ya. My buddy "Scoutmaster" had told me you were close to Mt Washington but I couldn't hang out any longer and had to travel. Anyway, I wanted to say "Hi" and wish you the best on your finish.

I left "The Barn" in Gorham on the Saturday morning you were arriving but couldn't stick around to see you; had to ride my Harley back to Ohio. Good Luck and keep pushin' it; Mt. Katahdin will crumble!
