NOC

Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired. Took care of the first one with a hamburger and a couple of eggs carried from Franklin. Not so angry now. Don't have to spend an hour getting set up to sleep and an hour in the morning to pack up again and use frost bitten fingers to light a stove which won't light cos there's no fuel. Very lonely here at NOC though. The only hiker here. Tired - yes. Legs in particular. Spent a lot of today sliding down steep grades covered with two feet of snow. It was great to go uphill for a change. Tomorrow - Stracoah Gap and a pick up from the Hike Inn at Fontana then a slack pack the next day from Stracoah to Fontana. That's the plan anyway.

Hey Josh,

Sounds like the weather is still being a real drag, but you're pushing it through it like a trooper. Try not to let the loneliness creep in. Keep the journal going, and jot down any feelings and thoughts that pop in. Solitude is a fertile breeding ground from which your innermost thoughts and deepest emotions can emerge.

You're in my thoughts every day, and even though you think you're out there by yourself, there are loads of folks back home who are pulling for you every step of the way.

In the meantime, enjoy the quiet, because when I join you on the trail, I'll probably bitch and complain the entire time.

Hang in there, kid!

Josh, you're one tough cookie. Sometimes I whine about having to walk across campus in this bitter cold. Then you remind me that I'm a total wimp, because you're out living in it!

You're doing great, and I'm proud of you!
