Wimp?
Guess what!
I'm home, in the berkshires. I am going back to the trail in two weeks, on March 2nd. Doing the trail in winter was cold and lonely, and an amazing growth experience, but it isn't what I was looking for in this hike. Also, going into 70 miles of wilderness (the smokies) alone, with snow on the way, did not seem to be the wisest decision. It turned out that coming home to wait two weeks, as I've wanted to do for sometime, was hardly more expensive than staying for a few days. Being home will give me a chance to earn some more funding as well. When I go back there will be more people, and even if it isn't much warmer, at least I will have company, and feel as if I am part of a community instead of feeling like the only person on earth. More on that story later. I'm working on a full write up of what happened since I left Franklin, and will post that later today.
Finally: to those of you who may wish to call me a wimp. You may call me a wimp, or whatever else you want, but only once you have met certain requirements: You must have hiked 175 (or more) miles over the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina, in January and February. Also, anybody who has been on an arctic expedition may call me a wimp. The rest of you? bug off!

Congrats for realizing that u were not having a good time... U said 2 weeks, actually u might consider 4 weeks. The only thing that may improve on the trail in 2 weeks is the number of persons on the AT but I have got a feeling that the temps & weather will not be much different.
Hopefully u can get in allot of walking with pack while at home, maybe 5 miles a couple times a week and 15 to 20 miles on Sat & Sun.. Your feet being in shape is definitely important to u "having fun" when u return to the AT...
Enjoy the time at home.
I forgot to mention this: u seem very defensive about possibly being called a wimp and u actually challenge people by saying if they haven't been there, e.g., hiked 175 miles in Jan & Feb in GA & NC, then "bug off". Remember u chose to hike in the dead of winter on the AT and in my opinion u were not prepared for what u got.
So, pls don't be defensive about getting off the trail since I believe u are the one that feels as if u were a wimp for leaving the trail. I am fairly certain u had to be talked into leaving by someone and that u were not a wimp for doing so..
Before returning to the AT, u may want make sure u know why u are hiking the AT as well as hiking the AT in winter.
Remember, u have nothing to prove to others only to yourself and that is why it is so important for u to know why u are out there now.
Fannypack, I didn't mean to sound defensive. It was meant mostly as a joke. I do have a voice in the back of my head, yelling at me, calling me a wimp, so in a way you are right, it's all me. But I'm fine with my decision, and I don't care much what other people think. It's my hike. The wimp bit was a joke. Thank you for the concern and advice though.
